UNDP timbuktoo AgriTech Pan-African Incubation Programme: Applications Open on a Rolling Basis

By
  • 0

African startups developing technology for agriculture and food systems can currently apply for the UNDP timbuktoo AgriTech Pan-African Incubation Programme.

The programme operates through the timbuktoo AgriTech Hub in Ghana and accepts applications on a rolling basis, with new cohorts admitted quarterly. UNDP says the first cohort began in September 2026, with additional cohorts following every three months.

That means founders do not need to wait for one annual application cycle.

What Is the timbuktoo AgriTech Programme?

The AgriTech programme is part of timbuktoo, UNDP’s pan-African innovation initiative designed to strengthen startup ecosystems across the continent.

Through the AgriTech Hub, startups receive structured incubation support from accredited incubators and gain access to a wider network of founders, mentors, investors and ecosystem partners.

The initiative is designed to help African founders build scalable businesses capable of improving agricultural productivity, food systems and farmer livelihoods.

Which Startups Can Apply?

Eligible startups must:

  • Be based in Africa or build solutions for African agricultural markets;
  • Have a prototype or Minimum Viable Product;
  • Have a committed founding team;
  • Address a clearly defined problem within the agricultural value chain;
  • Demonstrate growth and scalability potential.

UNDP particularly encourages applications from women-led startups, young entrepreneurs and founders working in rural or underserved communities.

Which AgriTech Areas Are Relevant?

The programme is broad within agriculture.

Possible areas include:

  • Climate-smart agriculture;
  • Precision agriculture;
  • Agricultural data and analytics;
  • Market-access platforms;
  • Agri-finance;
  • Supply-chain technology;
  • Food processing;
  • Sustainable agricultural inputs;
  • Farmer productivity tools.

A startup does not need to fit into only one category.

The important question is whether technology creates a meaningful improvement somewhere within the African agricultural value chain.

What Do Selected Startups Receive?

Selected startups receive a combination of local incubation and wider pan-African support.

Benefits include:

  • Structured incubation from accredited African incubators;
  • Access to experienced entrepreneurs and sector specialists;
  • Mentorship;
  • Startup-development tools;
  • Access to the SIGMA digital platform powered by Seedstars;
  • Investment-readiness support;
  • Pitch-development assistance;
  • Investor engagement;
  • Demo days;
  • Ecosystem events;
  • Potential pathways into future accelerators and early-stage investment opportunities.

Is There Direct Grant Funding?

UNDP’s current AgriTech Launchpad announcement does not promise one fixed cash grant to every accepted startup.

The main value proposition is incubation, investor readiness, mentorship and ecosystem access.

Founders should therefore not market the opportunity as a guaranteed UNDP grant.

The programme may create pathways to future investment or acceleration opportunities, but admission alone does not guarantee capital.

What Stage Should Your Startup Be At?

This is not primarily for idea-only founders.

UNDP requires a prototype or MVP.

A strong applicant should ideally demonstrate some early evidence such as:

  • Prototype testing;
  • Pilot customers;
  • Farmer interviews;
  • User activity;
  • Letters of interest;
  • Initial revenue;
  • Partnerships.

Even if revenue is not yet required, evidence that the team understands the customer problem will strengthen the application.

How to Strengthen Your Application

Start with the agricultural problem.

Avoid generic statements such as:

“Agriculture is important in Africa.”

Instead explain the operational pain.

For example:

  • Farmers lose 25% of harvested produce before market;
  • Smallholders cannot access reliable soil information;
  • Buyers cannot trace produce effectively;
  • Rural farmers lack affordable financing;
  • Input distribution is inefficient.

Then show how your product solves the problem in a scalable way.

Current Application Status

Status: Open, rolling basis

Cohort structure: Quarterly

UNDP does not publish one universal closing date for the current rolling intake.

Founders should apply when their MVP and team are ready rather than waiting for a future annual call.

For African founders already building practical agricultural technology, the programme can provide the mentorship, structure and continental network needed to turn an MVP into a more investable business.
