DoW Arthritis Translational Research Award 2026: Up to $800,000
Research teams working to translate promising arthritis discoveries into clinically relevant solutions may qualify for the FY2026 Arthritis Research Program Translational Research Award.
The programme supports high-impact applied research with a clear pathway towards improving future clinical care.
Each selected project can receive up to $800,000 in total costs for a maximum of three years.
The required preproposal deadline was July 22, 2026, so the October 22 full-application date is now relevant only to invited applicants.
What Does the Translational Research Award Support?
The programme focuses on applied research that moves important scientific findings closer to clinical use.
It can address any type of arthritis.
Projects should have clear relevance to:
- Service Members;
- Veterans;
- Their families;
- The wider public.
The proposal should explain how the research could eventually improve diagnosis, prevention, treatment or disease management.
This Is a Preclinical Award
The FY26 Translational Research Award is intended for:
- Preclinical research;
- Animal research;
- Applied translational studies.
It cannot be used for clinical research or clinical trials.
Basic research is also not supported.
This means the ideal project sits between basic scientific discovery and clinical testing.
Preliminary Data Are Required
Applicants need preliminary or published evidence supporting the proposed work.
The programme is not intended for speculative concepts with no foundation.
Applicants should show:
- Previous findings;
- Biological or technical rationale;
- Translational pathway;
- Defined preclinical milestones.
What Makes a Strong Translational Project?
The proposal should identify exactly what prevents an existing discovery from moving towards patient use.
Examples might include:
- Need for preclinical validation;
- Dose or delivery optimisation;
- Biomarker validation;
- Animal efficacy studies;
- Safety studies;
- Device testing;
- Therapeutic-development work.
Then show how the proposed research removes that barrier.
How Much Funding Is Available?
Maximum award:
$800,000 total costs
Maximum duration:
3 years
CDMRP expects approximately $1.6 million to fund roughly two projects.
Who Can Apply?
The organisational eligibility is broad.
Qualifying foreign and domestic:
- Universities;
- Research organisations;
- Nonprofits;
- Businesses;
- Government institutions;
- Public and private entities
may participate, subject to the complete federal funding announcement.

The opportunity still appears “open” in some federal funding databases because the invited full-application stage remains active. That should not be interpreted as a new applicant being able to start an application today.
