UNDP timbuktoo CreativeTech Launchpad: Rolling Applications for African Startups
African founders building technology across film, music, gaming, animation, design and the creator economy can currently apply for the UNDP timbuktoo CreativeTech Launchpad.
The programme is hosted through the timbuktoo Creatives Hub in South Africa and accepts applications on a rolling basis, with new cohorts admitted every three months.
The first cohort began in September 2026, meaning additional startups continue to be considered for subsequent cohorts.
What Is the CreativeTech Launchpad?
The CreativeTech Launchpad is a pan-African incubation programme for technology-enabled companies operating across Africa’s creative economy.
The programme recognises that African creative businesses often have strong talent and audiences but face challenges involving:
- Business structure;
- Technology;
- Distribution;
- Monetisation;
- Investment;
- Market access;
- Scaling.
Selected startups receive incubation support intended to help them become stronger and more investment-ready businesses.
Who Can Apply?
The current eligibility criteria require startups to:
- Be based in Africa or serve African markets;
- Have a prototype or Minimum Viable Product;
- Have a committed founding team;
- Build a technology-enabled solution relevant to the creative economy;
- Demonstrate potential to grow and scale.
UNDP particularly encourages applications from:
- Women-led startups;
- Youth entrepreneurs;
- Founders from underserved communities.
Which Creative Industries Qualify?
Relevant areas include:
- Digital content;
- Animation;
- Gaming;
- Music;
- Film;
- Design;
- Creator-economy platforms;
- Immersive technologies;
- AI-enabled creative tools;
- Other technology-driven creative-industry solutions.
The programme is therefore broader than simply supporting artists.
The startup should have a technology or scalable innovation component.
What Support Do Founders Receive?
Selected startups gain access to:
- Structured incubation;
- Experienced mentors;
- Entrepreneurs and industry experts;
- Pan-African founder networks;
- Investor-readiness support;
- Pitch development;
- Investor engagement;
- Demo days;
- Ecosystem events;
- Digital startup-development tools.
Participants also receive access to the timbuktoo Launchpad platform powered by Seedstars’ SIGMA, which supports learning, mentorship matching, progress tracking and startup development.
Does the Programme Give Every Startup Cash?
No fixed cash award is stated in the current UNDP announcement.
This is important.
The Launchpad should be described as an incubation and investment-readiness programme, not a guaranteed grant programme.
Startups may gain access to future investment pathways, but founders should not assume admission automatically results in funding.
What Does a Strong CreativeTech Startup Look Like?
The strongest applicants combine creativity with a scalable business model.
For example, a platform helping musicians distribute and monetise content across Africa could be stronger than a traditional production company that simply sells creative services.
Likewise, an animation studio may become more investable if it owns scalable IP, proprietary tools or technology-driven distribution.
Founders should demonstrate how the business can grow beyond simply adding more human labour.
What Evidence Should You Include?
Useful evidence can include:
- Active creators;
- Users;
- Revenue;
- Audience growth;
- Licences;
- Partnerships;
- Content performance;
- Pilot customers;
- Product usage;
- Early market validation.
Your application should show that your product is not merely interesting, but useful.
