DoW Autism Clinical Trial Award 2026: Up to $1.75 Million
Researchers conducting clinical trials designed to improve autism treatment and management may receive substantial funding through the FY2026 Autism Research Program Clinical Trial Award.
The programme supports trials ranging from early proof-of-concept work to larger studies evaluating efficacy in defined populations.
A standard Clinical Trial Award can provide up to $1.5 million.
The Partnering Principal Investigator Option for an Early-Career Investigator can provide up to $1.75 million.
Projects can run for up to four years.
The required pre-application stage closed July 27, 2026. Therefore, the October 22 deadline is only for invited applicants.
What Can the Clinical Trial Evaluate?
Eligible trials may evaluate approaches such as:
- New products;
- Pharmacological agents;
- Biologics;
- Medical devices;
- Clinical guidance;
- Behavioral or healthcare approaches;
- Emerging technologies.
The study should have strong potential to improve autism treatment, management or quality of life.
What Does the Programme Want to Achieve?
The Autism Research Program places emphasis on research that addresses meaningful needs identified by the autism community.
Projects should be capable of influencing real-world outcomes rather than simply producing another academic publication.
Potential areas include:
- Treatment;
- Healthcare access;
- Quality of life;
- Evidence-based practice;
- Lifespan needs;
- Issues affecting military families;
- Emerging clinical technologies.
Community Collaboration Is Required
FY26 Clinical Trial Award applications must include meaningful community collaboration.
At least one community partner should participate, such as:
- An Autistic individual;
- Caregiver;
- Representative of an autism organisation;
- Community advocate.
The relationship should continue throughout the project.
The partner should help shape decisions rather than simply attend occasional meetings.
Preliminary Data Are Important
Clinical trials require sufficient supporting evidence to justify exposing human participants to the proposed intervention.
The application should demonstrate:
- Scientific rationale;
- Preliminary evidence;
- Feasibility;
- Statistical design;
- Appropriate endpoints;
- Risk management.
The programme also expects a transition plan explaining what happens if the study succeeds.
Partnering PI Option
The programme includes a special route combining an experienced investigator with an Early-Career Investigator.
The objective is to support both impactful autism research and future research leadership.
This option carries the higher $1.75 million cost cap.
