Y Combinator Winter 2027: How to Apply for YC and Receive $500,000 in Startup Funding
For founders dreaming of building a globally significant technology company, the Y Combinator Winter 2027 Batch is officially accepting applications.
Y Combinator, commonly known as YC, has backed companies including Airbnb, Stripe, DoorDash and many other technology businesses. The Winter 2027 programme will run from January to March 2027 in San Francisco, with founders participating in an in-person startup-building experience.
The on-time application deadline is November 2, 2026 at 8:00pm Pacific Time. Applicants who submit by the deadline are expected to receive a decision by December 11. YC may still review late applications, but it does not guarantee when late applicants will receive a response.
What Is the Y Combinator Winter 2027 Batch?
YC is an early-stage startup investor and accelerator that works with founders intensively for approximately three months.
The Winter 2027 batch begins with an in-person kickoff in San Francisco and includes regular founder gatherings, conversations with experienced entrepreneurs and close interaction with YC partners.
Each accepted company is assigned a YC General Partner who works closely with the founders. YC says its partners maintain direct communication with companies throughout the batch and typically meet their assigned startups weekly.
Unlike many accelerators, YC invests in companies immediately after acceptance rather than waiting for the programme to begin.
How Much Does Y Combinator Invest?
YC currently invests $500,000 in every accepted company.
The standard deal consists of two separate SAFE investments.
The first is $125,000 in exchange for 7% of the company. The remaining $375,000 is invested through an uncapped SAFE containing a Most Favoured Nation provision.
The second SAFE does not have a predetermined valuation cap. Instead, it can adopt favourable terms from qualifying subsequent SAFE financing before the company completes a priced round.
YC also receives participation rights that allow it to invest in future fundraising rounds. Importantly, YC does not charge participating startups a programme fee.
Founders should understand that the $500,000 is an investment rather than a grant. Accepting YC funding involves giving YC ownership in the company.
Who Can Apply to YC Winter 2027?
YC accepts applications from startups around the world.
Companies can apply at extremely early stages. Some founders apply with little more than an idea, while others already have a product, customers or meaningful revenue.
YC also allows founders to apply before incorporating their company.
For investment purposes, however, YC currently invests in corporations incorporated in the United States, Canada, Cayman Islands or Singapore. Startups incorporated elsewhere may need to reorganise under an eligible parent company if accepted.
Founders from Africa, Asia, Europe, Latin America and other regions can therefore apply, provided they are prepared to participate in the San Francisco programme and establish an appropriate corporate structure where necessary.
What Makes a Strong YC Application?
YC is known for preferring clear, direct answers over highly polished corporate language.
Founders should explain exactly what they are building, who needs it and what evidence suggests that customers care.
If your startup already has traction, include specific metrics such as users, revenue, transaction volume, retention, contracts, growth rates or customer engagement.
YC also pays close attention to the founding team. Explain how the founders met, how long they have worked together and why they are particularly qualified to solve the chosen problem.
Technical startups should clearly explain who builds the product. If substantial product development is outsourced, be prepared to explain why.
Your application should also answer one important question: why could this company become extremely large?
A niche idea can still qualify if there is a credible path towards serving a much larger market.
What Happens After You Apply?
YC reviews applications and invites promising companies to interview.
For the Winter 2027 cycle, most interviews are expected to take place by video conference during November and December.
YC says it generally communicates its decision on the same day as an interview. Founders who interview but are not accepted also receive feedback.
Successful companies then begin the investment process immediately.
Do Founders Need to Move to San Francisco?
Founders should plan to spend the batch in San Francisco.
YC’s official FAQ states that its batches are in person and feature regular San Francisco meetups. The organisation briefly operated remotely during the pandemic but returned to in-person programmes in 2022.
After the three-month programme, founders are free to locate the company wherever they choose.
Y Combinator Winter 2027 Deadline
The important dates are straightforward: applications should be submitted by November 2, 2026 at 8:00pm PT, successful on-time applicants should receive decisions by December 11, and the programme will run from January through March 2027.
Apply for Y Combinator Winter 2027
Founders considering YC should begin preparing their application early enough to explain the business with clarity rather than trying to impress reviewers with unnecessary jargon.
The best YC application makes the reader understand very quickly what you are building, why customers need it and why your team is capable of making it work.
