UNDP timbuktoo MineTech Startup Incubation Programme: Rolling Applications Open

African startups developing technology for mining and mineral value chains can currently apply for the UNDP timbuktoo MineTech Startup Incubation Programme.

The programme operates through the timbuktoo MineTech Hub in Zambia and admits startups on a rolling basis, with new cohorts entering approximately every three months.

The initiative seeks technologies capable of making African mining safer, cleaner, more transparent and more economically inclusive.

What Is the MineTech Launchpad?

The MineTech Launchpad is part of UNDP’s wider timbuktoo pan-African startup platform.

Selected companies receive incubation through accredited ecosystem partners and access to mentors, investors and other founders through the wider timbuktoo network.

The programme is particularly relevant to founders solving operational problems across mining and mineral processing rather than startups with only a general interest in natural resources.

Which Startups Can Apply?

To qualify, startups should:

  • Be based in Africa or target African mining markets;
  • Have a working prototype or MVP;
  • Have a committed team;
  • Solve a clear problem somewhere in the mining value chain.

Women-led and youth-led startups are particularly encouraged.

UNDP also encourages founders from mining-affected and underserved communities.

Which MineTech Areas Are Eligible?

The programme currently highlights areas such as:

  • Mine safety;
  • Workforce protection;
  • Artisanal and small-scale mining;
  • Mechanisation;
  • Mineral traceability;
  • Resource governance;
  • Environmental monitoring;
  • Climate resilience;
  • Lithium-ion battery technology;
  • Mineral value chains;
  • Remote mining;
  • Autonomous mining;
  • Mine dewatering;
  • Ventilation;
  • Geotechnical risk;
  • Trade and market access;
  • Financial inclusion for mining-linked businesses.

What Do Selected Startups Receive?

Support includes:

  • Structured incubation;
  • Accredited incubator support;
  • Mentorship;
  • Industry experts;
  • Investor access;
  • Founder networks;
  • Digital learning resources;
  • AI-supported startup guidance;
  • Investment-readiness support.

The objective is to help promising MineTech solutions move closer to commercial deployment.

Is Funding Guaranteed?

No fixed cash award is guaranteed to every startup in the current incubation announcement.

Founders should treat this as an incubation and ecosystem-access programme rather than a direct grant.

The wider timbuktoo initiative is designed to help ventures reach future investment and acceleration opportunities.

What if You Only Have an Idea?

There is a separate opportunity that may be more suitable.

UNDP launched a Pan-African MineTech Exploration Technology Pre-Incubation Programme on October 5, 2026 for students, researchers, engineers and early-stage entrepreneurs who do not yet need a finished product or company.

That separate pre-incubation opportunity closes on October 16, 2026.

This distinction is useful:

MineTech Startup Incubation: You should have a prototype or MVP.

MineTech Pre-Incubation: A strong early idea can be enough.

How to Strengthen Your Startup Application

Mining is highly technical.

Do not rely only on startup language.

Explain the operational problem clearly.

For example:

  • How many hours of downtime does the problem cause?
  • What safety risk exists today?
  • How much water or energy could the technology save?
  • What traceability gap does the product solve?
  • Who actually pays for the solution?

Industrial buyers need measurable value.

Current Application Status

Startup Incubation: Open on a rolling basis.

New cohorts: Approximately every three months.

There is no fixed annual closing date for the incubation programme.

For idea-stage MineTech applicants, the separate current pre-incubation application is:

Apply for the MineTech Pre-Incubation Programme

For African mining-tech founders, this creates two entry points depending on maturity: early idea development or structured incubation for an existing MVP.
