Tribal Colleges Education Equity Grants Program 2026: Apply for $228,571
Eligible Tribal Colleges can apply for funding through the USDA Tribal Colleges Education Equity Grants Program, a federal initiative designed to strengthen education in food and agricultural sciences for Native American and Alaska Native students.
The current competition provides approximately $8 million in total funding and expects to make about 35 awards of $228,571 each.
Applications close on October 7, 2026.
What Is the Tribal Colleges Education Equity Grants Program?
The programme is administered by the USDA National Institute of Food and Agriculture, commonly known as NIFA.
Its goal is to strengthen the teaching capacity of eligible Tribal Colleges in agriculture, food, natural resources and related sciences.
Rather than funding one narrow research project, the programme supports improvements in the educational systems that prepare Native students for careers in food and agricultural sciences.
Who Can Apply?
The current funding opportunity is specifically for 1994 Land-grant Institutions.
These are Tribal Colleges and Universities recognised under federal land-grant legislation.
This is not a general grant open to all colleges, nonprofits or private companies.
Institutions should confirm that they appear within the eligible 1994 Land-grant category before preparing an application.
What Can the Grant Fund?
NIFA identifies six legislatively mandated priority areas.
These include:
- Curriculum design and teaching-material development;
- Faculty development and teacher preparation;
- Student experiential learning;
- Equipment and instrumentation for science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics;
- Student recruitment and retention;
- Instruction-delivery systems and strategic partnerships.
A competitive proposal should connect its activities clearly with one or more of these priorities.
How Much Funding Is Available?
The current programme provides approximately:
Total funding: $8 million
Expected awards: 35
Award amount: $228,571
There is no matching requirement under the current notice.
The current NOFO also begins a new four-year continuation funding cycle.
What Makes a Strong Application?
The best proposals should show how federal funding will strengthen long-term educational capacity.
For example, an institution might use funding to modernise agricultural science laboratories, develop a new food-systems curriculum or create experiential learning opportunities linked to Tribal agriculture.
Applicants should demonstrate:
- Clear student need;
- Specific educational outcomes;
- Institutional capacity;
- Strong implementation plan;
- Realistic budget;
- How improvements will continue beyond the funding period.
Current Deadline

Because the deadline is today, institutions that have not already prepared the required federal registrations and application package may not realistically be able to begin from scratch.
