DoW Autism Idea Development Award 2026: Up to $750,000 for Innovative Research
Researchers developing unconventional, high-risk ideas that could significantly improve outcomes for Autistic individuals may qualify for the FY2026 Autism Research Program Idea Development Award.
The programme supports innovative research capable of producing important discoveries or opening entirely new areas of investigation.
Selected projects can receive up to $750,000 in total costs over three years.
The pre-application stage closed on July 27, 2026, so the October 22 full proposal deadline is limited to researchers already invited to continue.
What Is the Idea Development Award?
The award is designed for research that goes beyond incremental progress.
A competitive project might:
- Challenge an existing autism research paradigm;
- Introduce a new scientific concept;
- Develop an innovative research approach;
- Investigate an overlooked problem;
- Produce data that creates a new research pathway.
The central emphasis is innovation combined with potential impact.
Preliminary Data Are Required
Although the programme encourages bold ideas, applicants still need preliminary evidence.
The supporting data may come from:
- The PI;
- Collaborators;
- Published literature;
- Related research areas.
The evidence should demonstrate that the proposed idea has a sound scientific basis.
Are Clinical Trials Allowed?
No.
Clinical trials are not permitted under the Idea Development Award.
Other clinical research may be allowable where it does not meet the formal definition of a clinical trial.
Researchers planning interventional human studies should determine whether the Autism Clinical Trial Award is more appropriate.
Who Can Lead the Project?
The standard award requires investigators generally at or above the level of Assistant Professor or equivalent.
Industry researchers can use equivalent independent-scientist positions.
The programme also permits a Partnering PI model where two investigators collaborate on one integrated project.
What Types of Autism Research Are Relevant?
Applicants are strongly encouraged to address current Autism Research Program Areas of Interest.
Projects outside those areas can still be considered where the researcher provides strong justification that the proposal addresses an important unmet autism research need.
The proposed work must have direct relevance to autism.
How Much Funding Is Available?
Maximum per project:
$750,000 total costs
Maximum duration:
3 years
CDMRP expects approximately:
$2.25 million total programme funding
to support around three awards.
How to Write a Strong Innovation Case
Do not simply label the project “innovative.”
Explain what is genuinely different.
For example:
- What existing assumption does the project challenge?
- What research question has not been asked?
- What new method is being introduced?
- Why could the findings substantially change autism research or care?
Reviewers should understand both the novelty and the practical importance.

The federal opportunity remains technically active because the full-application phase is still underway, but it should not be listed as an open first-stage opportunity for new researchers.
