DoW Military Burn Discovery Award 2026: Up to $200,000 for Innovative Burn Research

By
  • 0

Researchers developing bold early concepts in combat-relevant burn care should know about the FY2026 Military Burn Research Program Discovery Award.

The award supports innovative and potentially groundbreaking research that can create new directions for burn care in austere and resource-limited military environments.

Projects can receive up to $200,000 in total costs over a maximum of two years.

However, there is an important current-status warning.

The required pre-application deadline was July 7, 2026.

The current October 21, 2026 full-application deadline is only relevant to applicants who successfully completed the pre-application stage and received an invitation to submit.

New applicants cannot enter the FY26 competition at the full-application stage.

What Is the Discovery Award?

The Discovery Award is intended for research that is still early enough to be risky.

The programme wants ideas that may challenge conventional thinking or open entirely new research directions.

Projects can be:

  • Exploratory;
  • Hypothesis-driven;
  • Hypothesis-generating.

The research must still be supported by strong scientific reasoning and a credible study design.

What Type of Burn Research Fits?

Projects should be relevant to combat burn care, particularly treatment delivered in:

  • Austere environments;
  • Resource-limited environments;
  • Distributed operational settings.

The programme is interested in knowledge that could eventually improve how burn injuries are assessed, stabilised or treated when specialised burn-care facilities are not immediately available.

Is Preliminary Data Required?

No.

Preliminary data are allowed but are not required.

That makes the Discovery Award particularly useful for scientifically credible ideas that are too early for larger translational grants.

However, applicants cannot substitute lack of preliminary data for weak reasoning.

The proposed research still needs a strong scientific rationale.

Are Clinical Trials Allowed?

No.

Clinical trials are not permitted under the Discovery Award.

Non-interventional clinical research may be allowed where appropriate.

The programme is primarily intended to generate early evidence that can support later scientific investigation or product development.

How Much Funding Is Available?

The maximum is:

$200,000 in total costs per award

Maximum duration:

2 years

CDMRP expects approximately $400,000 total programme funding, enough for roughly two awards.

Who Can Apply?

The funding opportunity uses broad organisational eligibility.

Principal investigators may be at different career levels.

The original competition was open to qualifying domestic and international organisations, including academic, nonprofit, government and commercial research environments, subject to the full federal announcement.

What Makes a Strong Discovery Project?

Innovation matters more than incremental progress.

A project should not simply repeat an established burn-care experiment with a slightly different variable.

The application should explain:

  • What current burn-care assumption is being challenged;
  • Why the idea is novel;
  • Why the research matters in combat conditions;
  • What evidence would be generated;
  • What future research becomes possible if the project succeeds.

Current Status

Pre-application deadline: July 7, 2026, closed.

Invitation date: August 26, 2026.

Full application deadline: October 21, 2026.

Current applicant status: Invited applicants only.

Founders, companies and research teams that missed the July pre-application should monitor the Military Burn Research Program for the next fiscal-year announcement rather than attempting to submit a new FY26 application now.
